On Friday, Gillen Brewer celebrated Grandparents' Day! The Coconut Tree’s used the Letter of the Week, Ms. P, for inspiration! After greeting their guests, the students invited them to help decorate picture frames using different art materials and colors. The students felt really proud to show off their artistic and creative skills. Next, the students and their guests took silly pictures while standing behind an enormous picture frame! Finally, the students chose a library book to read with their special visitor! Grandparents' Day in the Coconut Tree classroom was perfect in every way.

This week, the Coconuts were given the opportunity to observe and pet a handful of lizards with Gabby from the Art Farm! Gabby introduced the class to Rosie (the bearded dragon), Frank (the chuckwalla lizard), and Danielle (the crocodile lizard). After discussing the similarities and differences between each lizard (e.g., size, habitat, coloring) the students were given a chance to hold and pet the reptiles. The Coconut Trees thoroughly enjoyed Gabby's visit! Our journey began with a pile of soil and the curiosity to identify, explore, and discover the types of plants growing in our classroom, school, and community. Through hands-on learning experiences, the students in Room 227 discovered a variety of interesting facts about plants including: the parts of a plant, where plants are located, and what plants need to survive. After learning, exploring, and discovering information about plants, the students generated a list of potential class names. The students identified an interesting plant in the storybook, Chicka Chicka Boom Boom, and immediately began researching Coconut Trees. Eventually, the students narrowed down their list to four different types of plants: Bamboo Trees, Lilies, Chrysanthemums, and Coconut Trees. The students created a classroom garden and spent the next few days caring for the unique plants. After much consideration, the class decided to vote on a classroom name. The students came together and briefly reviewed the facts they had learned. After each student voted, the class counted the number of votes and concluded that The Coconut Trees had won! |
